Watch out before accepting diagnosis and treatment, says one medical professional

Chronic Arthritis May Be Result of Rubella Vaccine

In 1969, three Rubella Vaccines were licensed in the United States:

HPV-77:DE-5 (duck embryo); HPV-77:DK-12 (dog kidney) and Cendehill (rabbit kidney) strains.

DK-12 was taken off the market as a result of high rates of joint complaints reported.

After the RA 27/3 (human diploid fibroblast) strain was licensed in January, 1979, the other strains were discontinued.

Rubella is considered to be a safe vaccine and most adverse reactions, such as fever and rash, following the vaccination are attributed to the measles component. Fever, lymphadenopathy, and arthralgia are the most common complaints that follow Rubella Vaccination.  They only happen in susceptible persons and are more common in adult women.

The joint symptoms (such as pain, redness and swelling) are associated with the Rubella component of MMR. Arthralgia and transient arthritis happen more often in susceptible adults than in children and are more often in susceptible women than in men.

Acute arthralgia or arthritis following vaccination of children with RA 27/3 vaccine are rare. About 25 percent of susceptible post-pubertal females develop acute arthralgia following the vaccination. And about 10 percent have been reported to have acute arthritis-like signs and symptoms. On rare occasions transient peripheral neuritic complaints, like pain in arms and legs, have also been reported.

Established during a one-year follow up of chronic arthritis following Rubella and Hepatitis B vaccination, and based upon analysis of the vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS) database, chronic arthritis adverse reactions following adult Rubella Vaccination were primarily reported in females at about 45-years-old, 10 to 11 days after vaccination.

This particular study revealed that adult Rubella Vaccines were statistically associated with chronic arthritis which persisted at least a year. However, potential biases in the reporting rates of adverse reactions to VAERS were not observed.
